Where the Wright brothers learned to fly
The
famous Wright brothers - Orville and Wilbur Wright, chose Kitty Hawk, N.C., for
their glider and powered airplane experiments due to its sand and strong winds.
They made their first three flights in 1903 but decided to continue their
experiments closer to Dayton, Ohio. They chose an 84-acre site called Huffman
Prairie, 8 miles northeast of town, where they built a catapult to propel their
plane. The brothers learned how to warp the wings to bank their biplane,
enabling controlled turns. On October 5, 1905, Wilbur circled Huffman Prairie
29 times before his fuel ran out, marking the beginning of aviation. Today, the
Huffman Prairie Flying Field, including a reconstructed catapult and launching
track, is part of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. The
Wright Brothers Memorial overlooks Huffman Prairie, the largest prairie remnant
in Ohio.
